The Premier League Popularity

What makes Leicester City the most talked about football club in the world? Many of you will say; ‘Because they are a small club challenging for the title’, ‘Because they are supposed to be fighting to avoid relegation’, and something like that.

I believe this is the first time Ranieri ever met Benitez in an official match. I couldn't find a picture of them together before last night game. Though they both had managed the same teams in the past, like Chelsea, Valencia, Napoli and Inter.

True, but would you talk about them today, if they played outside the big five leagues? Let’s say, in Switzerland or Scottish League? Because I wouldn’t.

Shinji Okazaki scored the only goal against Benitez's Newcastle United last night.

The English Premier League today is the most popular football league in the world, taking away the spotlight from the Italian Serie A which was the most popular league in 1990s. This league attracts not only foreign players, but also high-profile foreign managers like Mourinho, Ancelotti, Pellegrini, Hiddink and Guardiola as well, and new money-bag club owners. Don’t forget that.
But still the Premier League is not the toughest football league in Europe. Spanish La Liga is.

Yup, I know many of you will disagree. 😁
Spain still have three clubs playing in the Champions League. They are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. And all three of them are looking good so far in that top european competition.
They also have four teams playing in Europa League. The defending champions Sevilla and Villarreal are on verge to the quarter-finals, while either Athletic Bilbao or Valencia will follow them.
The reason why Premier League looks more interesting for football fans is because they have at least four teams fighting for the title every season. While in La Liga, there are only two or three teams fighting for the title.
In Serie A, there are regular champions like Juventus, Milan and Inter. But there are also other teams who can upset the odds like Roma, Lazio, Napoli, Fiorentina and Torino. That’s why Serie A was very popular in the past. But since the league’s quality was weakened by calciopoli, the league games are no longer exciting. And the top clubs are no longer giants in Europe. Such sad story. The last time I watch Serie A matches was years ago, before Italy won their fourth World Cup. That was around ten years ago. I remember the old stars who are still playing today. They are Totti, Buffon and Pirlo. Pirlo is still playing, right?
I don’t know much of today’s Serie A star. They are Balotelli, Pogba, Dybala, Higuain, Salah, and Nainggolan. That’s all.
Well, I believe next season will be more interesting in Premier League. Chelsea, United, City and Arsenal will come back stronger with their new managers 😆, while Leicester, Tottenham and Liverpool will also return with new missions. They all will aim for the highest prizes available.

      1. Yeah popularity is very important. That’s what brings in the money and quality players and managers follow. But I hope, with the popularity, the quality of football of English teams in Europe increase. Because right now it is way below par compared to the likes of Barcelona or Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
        No worries! 🙂
